Man injured in crash sues restaurants for allegedly over-serving motorcyclist

A Berwick man seriously injured when a fellow biker crashed into him following an afternoon of bar-hopping filed suit Monday against two restaurants for allegedly over-serving the motorcyclist. Richard R. McFadden, of 534 E. 11th St., alleges Wheels Bar and Grill at 5222 Nuangola Road, Nuangola, and JJ Banko's Seafood at 39 Allen St., West Nanticoke, were negligent in serving drinks to 45-year-old Anthony Joseph Russo of Bloomsburg prior to the crash.

Gov. Tom Wolf's proposal to charge municipalities which rely on state police for police protection has raised some concerns across the commonwealth, including some local elected officials. As part of his plan to balance the state's $32.5 billion spending plan, Wolf has proposed charging municipalities that rely solely on state police for protection an annual fee of $25 per person.

‘Christmas Miracle’ – Family Survives Crash under Truck

Rescuers are calling it a Christmas miracle — a family from Ohio survived a crash on Interstate 81 in Luzerne County. Their car was wedged under a tractor trailer, dragged for a quarter mile and all four walked away from the wreck.

The developer, TFP Limited headed by Robert Tamburro, is seeking a conditional use approval from the supervisors along with approval of the overall plan.

Authorities Busy in Luzerne County: Fire and Coroner Called and an Arrest

Authorities in Luzerne County have been busy in the city of Wilkes-Barre, where a fire hit a home, and the coroner had to be called to the scene. About an hour ago, on Burma Road near Nuangola, police captured a man they believe may have been trying to get police to shoot him.

For nearly 30 years, the Free Medical Clinic at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on South Mountain Boulevard has provided medical care for people with illness who could not otherwise afford it. Two physicians who have volunteered their services for many years have resigned, leaving just nurse practitioner Alice Doxsey, who cannot see patients without the supervision of a physician.

Jeffrey D. Beck named secretary in Rice Twp.

Jeffrey D. Beck of Nuangola, one of two finalists for the Luzerne County manager position, has been appointed Rice Township secretary. Beck, who was the unanimous selection of township supervisors at a recent special meeting, replaces Alicia Stier, who resigned effective May 20. Marcia Thomas, chairwoman of the township board of supervisors, told me she was disappointed to see Stier leave, but that the township was fortunate to have someone with Beck's qualifications to fill the position.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBIT: The Luzerne County Historical Museum, 69 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, opened its newest exhibit, “The Roaring ’20s,” on Friday, March 4. The exhibit, which features numerous artifacts from the era including over 30 actual 1920s dresses, opened with a 1920s themed party. The exhibit will continue through its normal hours, from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, until September.

Rock opera ‘Tommy’ launches Nuangola theater season

My wife and I pass a pile of garbage/trash at the Dorrance Exit 155 of Interstate 81 every week, and sometimes more, to visit our daughter who is a resident at White Haven Center. I would clean the trash, but I, with my community organization in Newport Township, spend a great deal of time cleaning trash in our municipality, and I can just imagine the disgust of people who travel this route on a daily basis.
